“Is CrossFit Too Hard?” Why It’s Actually One of the Most Accessible Ways to Train

By Steve Bunn, Owner & L3 CrossFit Coach at CrossFit Cheltenham

If you’ve ever thought “CrossFit looks great… but it’s probably too hard for me”, you’re not alone.

In fact, it’s the number one concern we hear from people before they ever step through the door at CrossFit Cheltenham.

And I get it.

You see videos online of handstand walks, heavy barbells, pull-ups and workouts that look… intense. It’s easy to assume CrossFit is only for already-fit people.

The truth?

That version of CrossFit is not how most people train — and it’s certainly not how we coach. Let me explain.

CrossFit looks hard because you only see the extremes

Social media has a habit of showing the loudest, flashiest end of the spectrum.

What you don’t see are:

• The 45-year-old mum training twice a week to feel stronger

• The guy in his 50s rebuilding confidence after years of inactivity

• The busy professional who just wants more energy and fewer aches

That’s the reality of most CrossFit gyms — especially CrossFit Cheltenham.

CrossFit is scalable. That’s the whole point. The defining feature of CrossFit isn’t intensity.

It’s scalability.

Every workout can be adjusted for:

• Age

• Injuries

• Fitness level

• Confidence

• Experience

The same session might include:

• One person lifting a barbell

• Another using dumbbells

• Someone else moving a lighter weight

• Or simply focusing on technique and control

Everyone trains together, but at the level that’s right for them.

You don’t need to “get fit first”

This is one of the biggest myths we hear:

“I’ll come to CrossFit once I’m fitter.”

That’s like saying:

“I’ll start lessons once I already know how to drive.”

At CrossFit Cheltenham, people start:

• Out of shape

• Nervous

• Unsure

• Lacking confidence

That’s normal.

That’s expected.

That’s literally what coaching is for.

Coaching is what makes it accessible. CrossFit without coaching would be intimidating.

CrossFit with coaching is one of the safest, most supportive ways to train.

Our coaches:

• Explain movements clearly

• Offer options for every exercise

• Keep an eye on technique

• Encourage sensible progress — not ego lifting

You’re never left to figure it out on your own.

What most people actually do at CrossFit Cheltenham

The majority of our members:

• Train 2–4 times per week

• Focus on strength, fitness and feeling better

• Scale workouts appropriately

• Build confidence gradually

No pressure.

No judgement.

No need to be “good” at CrossFit.

The real question isn’t “Is CrossFit too hard?”

The real question is:

Is this coached, supportive environment right for me?

One of the ways to answer that is by having a conversation first.
