How long have you been with us at CrossFit Cheltenham? About 2 years
Tell us about yourself... I work as a research engineer at Dowty Propellers in Cheltenham and live with my partner Megan and our 2 cats. I've been coming to Crossfit Cheltenham for 2 years this November and even managed to drag Megan along!
What do you do outside of the box? I spend my time cooking, playing with the cats and spending time with Megan planning our wedding!
What was it that made you decide to give CrossFit a try? I spent a number of years as a regular gym goer; using machines, following online programmes, trying to find a rhythm and it just wasn't working. It got boring. I remembered that a friend of mine started crossfit ages ago so we had a chat and she convinced me to give it a try! I've never looked back since.
What is your favourite thing about CrossFit Cheltenham? The coaches at Crossfit Cheltenham are the best around. With work, I travel around the UK visiting universities and research organisations so I tend to drop in to numerous boxes. I'm yet to find a team of coaches as good as the ones at Crossfit Cheltenham.
Who inspires you at CrossFit Cheltenham? Everyone does. I find that we all inspire each other through going through the same pain as one another!
What time of day do you prefer to train? I tend to come in straight after work at 5pm.
What else do you get up to outside of the gym? We have friends in different parts of the UK so we tend to spend our time driving down the motorway and visiting them whenever we have a few days spare.
What is your favourite CrossFit WOD? It has to be Diane. 21-15-9 deadlift and handstand press ups. Mainly due to the fact it's easily scaled, easy to make slightly harder and a great way to track progress in terms of technique and speed.
What is your least favourite WOD? Fran. Definitely Fran. Making yourself pick up the bar when your grip is ruined. The lung pain afterwards is horrible. From the start that WOD is just awful.
Of all the many different CrossFit disciplines, which one do you excel in? I wouldn't say I excel in any area yet! I'm still finding ways of making my technique better and still learning how do certain movements properly. If I had to pick one it would have to be weightlifting, I've seen some dramatic improvements on my numbers lately.
If you could create your own WOD, what would it be? Light weight, high volume barbell cycling. Something like half weight, double DT I suppose.
What is your favourite WODing jam? Rabble Rouser by Enter Shikari
What’s your favourite food? Pizza. Especially pizza from Fat Toni's in town!
What’s your ultimate ‘cheat’ meal? We make this dish called pizza chicken (yes there's a theme here!) Where you basically mix tomatoes, peppers, and a small amount of chorizo, cover a chicken breast and bake it before covering it in low fat cheese. Much healthier than it sounds and really tasty!
What’s your favourite tipple? My go to is always a gin and tonic.
What’s your favourite memory at CrossFit Cheltenham so far? Squat cleaning over 100kg. It was after we went through Grace so the movement was really warmed up. We went through 7 minutes of hitting a new 1 rep max and I managed to get 101kg after spending months attempting 100. Jerking it is the next goal!
Do you have any funny stories of your time at CrossFit Cheltenham? I was doing a workout last Friday called Dork. A horrible 6 round workout with double unders, kettlebells swings and burpees. In my last round my legs were barely working and some of the guys who had finished we're shouting at me to keep going. As I jumped back to do one of my burpees my right leg just didn't move, resulting in me falling straight onto my face in front of an entire class.
Tell us a fun fact about you! When i decided to get into shape I decided that for motivation id set up a just giving page for the tough mudder I signed up for. I ended up raising nearly £700 in a few months.
What are your goals and aspirations for the next year? I have two major ones: first ring muscle up and a bodyweight snatch
How has CrossFit improved you or your life? It's dramatically changed my body shape and the way i look at myself. I'm no longer focussed on how much I weigh, it's about how i perform. As part of that my confidence has grown massively.
