Meet Sarah!

IMG_7024.JPG

How long have you been at CrossFit Cheltenham? I’ve been at CrossFit for 2.5 years

Why did you join CrossFit Cheltenham? I needed to put myself out of my comfort zone. My training plan was leaving me feeling that I should be pushing myself harder but I didn’t have the push of like minded people to spur me on!

What is your favourite thing about CrossFit Cheltenham? I absolutely love being upside down so anything with a handstand and I’m happy. But what I also love is that feeling of accomplishment when you’ve tried your damn hardest, got bruises or cut hands, and then you bloody crack whatever it is you’ve been trying to get, and then I will literally bore anyone who will listen to me about it!!!!!

Who inspires you at CrossFit Cheltenham? I think I’m inspired by a number of people. Coaches obvs, then those of us who are going through our own journey but supporting one another along the way

What time of day do you prefer to train? I normally do open gym in the morning on a Monday or have PT with Kylie. We work through those bits that are still alluding me!! I also do a Tuesday AM class, and lunchtime on a Wednesday and Thursday. Then Friday is when myself and a bunch of awesome women get together and pick a WOD or two and help to get each other through! I met these girls at CrossFit and I have a great respect and fondness for them! We push each other through, especially when we crazily decide to do a Hero WOD!!!

What is your favourite WOD? Probably one where you can either just chip away for 40 mins or anything where you’re upside down. I’m not keen on any WOD where you have to finish with a mile run!!!!

Of all the different CrossFit disciplines, which one do you excel in? I’m not really sure I excel in CrossFit but I absolutely have fallen in love with it and for the last few weeks have done the HIIT class on a Saturday, so that’s taken me from two years ago and twice a week to now 6 times a week!

What is your favourite WODing jam? I just need some kinda upbeat music to get me through!

What is your favourite food? Favourite food would have to be peanut butter!!!!

What's your ultimate 'cheat meal'? Steak with chunky chips!

What's your favourite tipple? My favourite tipple would be a gin and tonic but if I’m out I love a dirty martini If anyone’s buying.

What's your favourite memory at CrossFit Cheltenham so far? Favourite memory, that’s hard to answer but I can tell you a few of the highlights...
This years open and being able to RX it all!
Making so many new friends
The banter amongst us
The way everyone is so encouraging and no big egos!
The fact that I’m now happy and confident to do open gym, something I didn’t imagine doing!
Getting TTB
Strict pull up
Chest to bar
I couldn’t pull anywhere near a full pull up when I started

Fun fact about me...
I’m a Guinness world record holder!!

How has CrossFit improved you or your life? CrossFit has improved my strength and overall fitness. It got me my spark back for exercise!

What are your goals and aspirations for the next year? My goals are to lean up more and to just keep improving on all elements. I really want to get my bar muscle ups without a band and butterfly pull ups, oh and chest to bars! I’m happy with the weights side of things. I just wish I had found CrossFit when I was in my twenties but heyho never too late to get started!

Do you have a motto? I don’t know if I have a motto but my husband is always saying “don’t worry about things until they happen”, which is good advise as worrying won’t change the outcome.

After a ride with my bike… I was training for triathlon, almost died twice due to the road… I realized that cycling in UK alone was not as safe as in France for myself! I remember that my partner told me about Crossfit, that it will be something I should like, I google it and decided to try!

How long have you been with us at CrossFit Cheltenham? Since July 2014

What was it that made you decide to give CrossFit a try? I became interested since speaking with someone at work, who had already done CrossFit for a few years. So I had done a few WODs at my current globo gym once a week taken from CrossFit.com. I'd always played competitive sports however began to enjoy the training more than game day. I was recovering from an injury (in a cast for 6mths following surgery) which put me out of rugby whilst I was recovering. I soon realised I didn't miss the rugby but was happy in the gym, then found CrossFit Cheltenham through some friends

What is your favourite thing about CrossFit Cheltenham? The community is great, whether it be at the box or at competitions. Everybody is approachable and willing to help and generally more so, the more experienced they are which is handy for when you want to pick someone's brain.

Who inspires you at CrossFit Cheltenham? David Shorunke.

What time of day do you prefer to train? It used to be 7am, pre baby, but now 7/8pm.

What else do you get up to outside of the gym? I'm a family man now so my time is now spent in farm parks and soft plays but I wouldn't change it. Fitness wise, the occasional run when I have to. Work on those weaknesses.

What is your favourite CrossFit WOD? King Kong.

What is your least favourite WOD? Kalsu (the burpee circle of doom breaks me).

Of all the many different CrossFit disciplines, which one do you excel in? As long as it's heavy, I'm happy. I do like the strongman stuff too.

If you could create your own WOD, what would it be? Not really thought about it. Anything with a heavy barbel, or rowing. Ideally short enough duration which doesn't require me to actually breath. Or if that's not possible, plenty or rest instead.

What is your favourite WODing jam? When it's a particularly sweaty miserable WOD, some angry D&B

What’s your favourite food? I have so much chicken, beef, rice and greens, I tend to go to town on cheese and crackers when the opportunity arrises.

What’s your ultimate ‘cheat’ meal? As of late, I do like Holee Cow burgers. Recommend Piggy in the Middle.

What’s your favourite tipple? I do like a cider....or port with my cheese.

What’s your favourite memory at CrossFit Cheltenham so far? The first SiD I went to in Bath. The atmosphere with the crowd and the big names there make you feel a bit like a pro athlete. That or Tribal Clash.

Do you have any funny stories of your time at CrossFit Cheltenham? There are plenty. People falling off boxes in qualifiers, people completing Open wods only to realise they got the weights wrong, people falling off rowers after an over zealous pull after not strapping in, or people getting their balls tangled up in a band on banded bar muscleups - YOU ALL KNOW WHO YOU ARE!

What are your goals and aspirations for the next year? I'd like to qualify for another international event and not get injured while I'm out there. It would be nice to finish one.

My motto is… Go big or go home. A classic.

Meet Sofia!

Sofia K deadlift.jpg

How long have you been with us at CrossFit Cheltenham? It’s my one year anniversary… cute!

What was it that made you decide to give CrossFit a try? It was something different and something I hadn’t tried previously. It was the beginning of a new year and I wanted to try something new. I then came across the crossfit taster sessions.

What is your favourite thing about CrossFit Cheltenham? The workouts are really sociable which makes it way more fun. It’s a great way to keep motivated with new friends.

Who inspires you at CrossFit Cheltenham? The coaches are great. Steve is an inspirational lead and it’s great that another female coach has joined, Hannah is so supportive.

What time of day do you prefer to train? 6pm always. Not a fan of working out early. Weekends are a good time to work out though if I’ve had a busy week and therefore I can catch up on sessions.

What else do you get up to outside of the gym? I work in HR for the NHS and I am currently studying a post grad at University of Gloucestershire so I am busy busy. I like to draw also but unfortunately my art work is not good enough for public viewing!

What is your favourite CrossFit WOD? I love variety in a WOD. So the ‘filthy fifty’ is great. I like to benchmark myself against how I last did.

What is your least favourite WOD? Anything with running or burpees…. They are really tough!

Of all the many different CrossFit disciplines, which one do you excel in? The clean and split jerk… This is a move I am able to lift my heaviest of weights. I get excited when it’s on the board for the WOD.

If you could create your own WOD, what would it be? The ‘Sofia’ – Complete as many reps as possible in 20 minutes of:

- Split jerks x 5

- Over the box burpees x 10

- Front squats x 15 -

Inch worm push ups x 20 -

Air squats x 25

What is your favourite WODing jam? Drake…. All day every day. Taylor Swift’s new stuff is great for working out though, it needs to be played more (hint hint).

What’s your favourite food? CHIPS

What’s your ultimate ‘cheat’ meal? Veggie burger and CHIPS (I eat like an athlete most of the time I promise)

What’s your favourite tipple? White Zinfandel Rose. However, now I’m getting older, I’m enjoying a G&T.

What’s your favourite memory at CrossFit Cheltenham so far? The open. I had joined for a month and thought it was crazy to enter. I entered on the last day through coach motivation and I achieved goals I would never have thought were possible. Surprisingly I didn’t come last. I’m entering again this year!

Do you have any funny stories of your time at CrossFit Cheltenham? My funniest crossfit story is when we had to do the wheelbarrow as a warm up. Amy Broomhall was responsible for holding my legs and decided to drop me. At the time, it was not amusing. My knees really hurt. However, luckily we have remained friends. I didn’t think I was that big, perhaps I should up my weekly training sessions….

Tell us a fun fact about you! I enjoy reality TV way more than I should. Kimmy K is fabulous.

What are your goals and aspirations for the next year? 2018. It’s the year of the abs.

My motto is… Don’t wish for another girl’s body. Want your body, but leaner, stronger and healthier.

Meet Chek!

Chek

How long have you been with us at CrossFit Cheltenham? I think about 5/6 years now???

What was it that made you decide to give CrossFit a try? I was tired of just lifting weights at the gym with no other purpose but just lifting more weight and getting bigger, it seemed pointless after a while (although I have a short attention span anyway). I was also very unfit, reluctant to do any kind of cardio and would be regularly out done by friends who played football or rugby outside the gym, a friend of mine went down and started at CrossFit Cheltenham so I thought I’d give it a try. Within 6 months I was on an unlimited membership and had cancelled my old gym membership, I was hooked!

What is your favourite thing about CrossFit Cheltenham? The People… It’s such a friendly environment to train. Everyone is so scared of their first CrossFit session and there’s really no reason to be, everyone is so lovely and so welcoming. A standard “hero” gym is much more intimidating, no-one talks, you just get evils in all those god damn mirrors…

Who inspires you at CrossFit Cheltenham? Ha, almost everyone… I train regularly but my diet and lifestyle holds me back… The dedication of lots of people at the Box, how “in-check” their diets are and their consistency of training is something I need to learn…2018 is going to be my year, watch this space…

What time of day do you prefer to train? 7am

What else do you get up to outside of the gym? I have another gym that I go to as I live about 40 minutes away from the box #dedication, when I work late shifts I go there to do some accessory and mobility work. I also like to Run with my Husky he gives me a good workout and Cycle on my rest days…

What is your favourite CrossFit WOD? Favourite one? Is that a thing? They all hurt so much… I quite like Murph, that’s always fun but also the Team WODS anything with a rest whilst someone else is working and I’m able to perform at my best and hit it hardest knowing I’ve got some rest coming up…

What is your least favourite WOD? Open 14.5 that’s some kind of hell… 21-18-15-12-9-6-3 reps of: Thrusters, 42.5kg & Barbell Burpees… I vowed I’d never do it again and I never have…

Of all the many different CrossFit disciplines, which one do you excel in? I would say I’m a Jack of All Trades rather than a Master of Any… I really enjoy the Gymnastic work, I’m pretty good at being upside down… Burpees I love for some reason, some of you may have seen my 1000 I did a while ago (never again) 1hr 59m 48s of my life I’m never getting back but I weirdly enjoyed it…

If you could create your own WOD, what would it be? There’s so much choice here but right now I’d go for a 30min AMRAP: 30ft HSWalk, 30 Double Unders, 30 Kettlebell Snatches, 30 Box Jumps, 30 Pull Ups, 3 Rope Climbs… That would be a good workout, just what I needed after the Christmas Feed….

What is your favourite WODing jam? Either Felix Navidad nothing beats that tune in December at the Box or Skrillex ft Damien Marley – Make it Bun Dem always goes well with a tasty workout…

What’s your favourite food? Any combination of Sugar and Starch…. is Fresh Baked Cookies a food? No? Well those regardless….

What’s your ultimate ‘cheat’ meal? Chinese Takeaway… drooling Yung Chow Fried Rice, Crispy Shredded Chilli Beef, Kung Po Chicken, Chilli & Garlic Ribs and Crispy Seaweed… BOOM!

What’s your favourite tipple? Cîroc Vodka on ice with a dash of Diet Coke….

What’s your favourite memory at CrossFit Cheltenham so far? Me and Master Bates put together the first of the Vodathalon Socials a little while ago… we had an Assault Course, An Octopus, Drinks, Nibbles, A Twerking Contest, Loads of great people, Trophy’s, Forfeits, Drinking Games and a full Box of Dutty Winer’s (video evidence available) to R Kelly’s Bump n Grind… that night got out of hand quickly!!!

Do you have any funny stories of your time at CrossFit Cheltenham? I broke my thumb in my taster class… that was pretty funny… I still came back a couple of days later, I was hooked from day one, despite the injury!

Tell us a fun fact about you! I’m the Box’s resident DJ… if you ever need some workout playlists give me a shout!

What are your goals and aspirations for the next year? 2018 is to be my fittest year yet, I have a clear goal and fresh structure and planning to my diet which for me is my big issue… I’ve had 29 years of enjoying eating garbage, I’m putting it all to one side for a while….

My motto is… Life is a series of mistakes held together by the corrections we make, never worry about the things we can’t change and ensure you enjoy everything you CHOOSE to do…
